Emily grew up loving to create and be crafty. She attended the University of Dubuque and received a graphic design degree. After college she worked several technical graphic design jobs. While great for honing her graphic designs skill, they were not as creative as she had hoped. In 2011 her mom, Kathy, a long time quilter, opened The Little Red Hen Quilt Shop in Muscatine, Iowa. While helping The Little Red Hen at a local AQS quilt show, Emily realized pattern design may be the perfect fit. As a fourth generation quilter, Emily was excited at the thought of having her own projects and fabric. Since then, she moved back to her hometown where she has published 7 books and over 50 patterns. She has projects featured in several quilting and sewing magazines such as Simply Vintage and Primitive Quilts. She tries to combine traditional primitive style with a new twist. Emily was ecstatic that The Little Red Hen was selected as a Top Ten Quilt Shops in the country for 2015 by American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine. The Little Red Hen is a one of a kind quilt shop that combines a florist, gift shop, greenhouse, and quilting all under one roof. The highlight of a visit to The Little Red Hen is its large cozy red barn featuring unique rustic décor with Emily’s designs. She travels to vend at many of the country’s quilt shows with her husband, Pete McCommons. When not on the road Emily feels lucky to work alongside her mom, dad, sister, and husband at The Little Red Hen. Her hobbies include drawing, sewing, wool applique, hand embroidery and playing with her cats. What Emily enjoys most about quilting is when her designs make someone happy.
